Cockroaches are one of the most common insects that live near a person’s house. In total, there are more than 4 thousand of them in the world. speciesbut only a few can be called home cockroaches. In Russia, these include red, black, less common American. It is impossible to answer unequivocally whether cockroaches fly. Not all varieties of these insects possess this ability.
Home cockroaches
To meet flying barbel in an apartment or house is an event that is rare and unlikely. Except if this house is located in the middle of the impassable wilds of a rainforest in either the countries of America or Africa. In the middle latitudes of Russia and neighboring countries there are creeping representatives of this species of insects.
The most common for the human eye so-called domestic pests are most often represented by three synanthropic species: black, red and American. The first two can be found in Moscow and everywhere in our country. American is common in many countries, but is rare in Russia.
On a note!
Only one is truly called the home species of these insects - madagascar hissing. They are bred at home in aquariums as exotic pets. Their wings are completely absent, and they are not able to fly.
Structure the ubiquitous insect is an elongated body, a small head with antennae and a pair located on it eye. The insect moves smartly with its six limbs. On the back there is one pair of wings, which is hidden under the hard elytra. You can examine them in more detail in the photo of a cockroach with wings.
Red cockroaches
The most frequent guest in the houses of our country is red cockroach or Prusak. He possesses a pair of developed wings, but uses them infrequently. The red-haired inhabitants of human homes do not need to fly thanks to omnivores. Here are a few cases where a prusak can use wings:
- during the mating season, the male and female attract each other, flapping their wings;
- fleeing from danger, the Prusak can spread his wings to intimidate the enemy;
- falling from a great height, the insect sometimes spreads its wings to the sides to plan down and soften the blow from falling.
It is not worth it to be afraid of the Prussians, and even more so of their flights. The wrecker has lost the ability to fly and is perfectly fleeing.
Black cockroaches
Black cockroaches they don’t fly, although they have wings, like their red brothers. They are more common in the southern regions of the mainland. The structure of their body is not much different from the structure of the red fellow, but they do not know how to fly at all and do not even try. They can be found both inside the human home, and in the crevices of buildings, farm buildings. Black barbel also prefer the dark time of the day for food, like the Prussians.
American cockroaches with wings
Immigrants from Africa got their name due to their massive resettlement precisely in North America.This type of insect can be called a flying cockroach, because it can fly longer distances than its other synanthropic counterparts. The wings of cockroaches are stiff and better developed, which allows them to control the flight.
On a note!
As a result of widespread use of land, water and air modes of transport, American winged pests are found in many cities and countries in Europe and Asia.
Pests live in sewer pipes, near landfills, where food is plentiful for them. During the mating season or at the time of danger, they can make sharp flapping wings, from which a jump occurs. From the side it looks like american cockroach trying to jump.
Winged Cockroaches in the Wild
Many species of these insects are not synanthropes and live in the wild far away from humans. For them, the need to fly more often than for domestic omnivorous pests. Such wild flying cockroaches include:
- Lapland is a resident of the American and European continents. It lives in forests, where it feeds exclusively on plant foods, in search of which the overseas inhabitant is forced to fly. Once in a man’s apartment building, he tries to quickly leave it.
- Banana - a representative of Ecuador. It lives in the litter of banana plantations, where it is cleverly masked in fallen foliage due to its green color. To move in space, cockroaches fly between trees.
- Asian - is a close relative of the redhead. The structure, color and size coincide with the structure of the Prusak with the exception of the greater length of the wings. This difference allows the Asian congener to make flights among the forest lands. Colonies of this species can be found near human dwellings. Their bright light of lanterns and other luminous objects attracts them.
Meeting with flying pests in central Russia is almost impossible. In exceptional cases, Asian or American species that prefer a hot and humid climate can be found in the southern regions of the country. They are able to frighten a person with their flights, but not cause direct harm. But the mere presence of these unpleasant creatures in the house does not bode well - insects are peddlers of dangerous infections. To eliminate the risk of infection, measures must be taken to get rid of pests as soon as possible.
