Moth is considered one of the most nasty domestic pests. But did you know that some are specially engaged in breeding larvae of burdock moths at home? These strange people are avid fishermen, and they use insect larvae as bait, especially suitable for winter fishing.
Where does burdock moth live?
Many people wonder where to find burdock moth in nature. Make it easy. Moreover, burdock is one of the most common plants that is distributed throughout Russia. You can recognize it by the characteristic bumps with crochet needles, with which it clings to the clothes and hair of animals, expanding its habitat.
In these cones, a rather thick grayish butterfly lays its eggs of a rather large size - burdock moth. From eggs, larvae subsequently hatch, which feed on the contents of the cone and are tidbits for roach and other fish species.
There are several types of moths, the larvae of which differ markedly from each other. They live in various plants:
- In the cones of a burdockdensely compressed, as if filled with glue, small whitish, oblong-shaped larvae live. They are easy to breed, but they are the most inappropriate for fishing - they spread too quickly on the hook.
- In the stems of burdock (as well as thistle and even elderberry branches), the most popular type of bait feels great. The yellowish tidy larva of burdock moth in the photo lives there. She can stay on the hook for a long time without losing her shape.
- In the stems of the Chernobyl (or wormwood) lives another larva of burdock moth, which is easy to obtain in summer, but difficult to breed in winter. Such larvae need to create special conditions, although they look very appetizing for fish.
Often, burdock moth for fishing is used in the company with a bloodworm or other types of bait, but this already depends on which fish the fishing season is open for. Experienced fishermen know all the nuances, and for beginners, burdock is almost an ideal option: cheap and effective.
On a note!
The burdock is not too common among beginner anglers just for the reason that many have not heard at all what can be used moth larvae as bait. And those who heard, have no idea where to get such a miracle, and even more so because you can easily breed it at home.
Many "seasoned" fishermen believe that bloodworms and maggots are more effective for winter fishing. But no one bothers to use the burdock as an additional treat, putting it on a hook with a company with larger insects. It all depends on individual preferences, but why not try it?
How to breed burdock moth
You can buy larvae of burdock moth in specialized stores. But this option is suitable for those for whom winter fishing is just an exotic one-time entertainment. For avid anglers, this way of acquiring burdock moth larvae is too costly. It’s easier to create your own mini-factory for their production at home, especially since it’s not so difficult.
In order for the moth to multiply quickly and feel good, all that’s needed is just:
- collect cones or stems of plants in which you found eggs or larvae of burdock moth;
- bring the plants home and put them in a cardboard box or glass container with a lid (it’s more convenient in the glass. as you can see what happens in the jar);
- place the container in a dark, warm, but not hot, dry place (temperature 15-25aboutFROM);
- check the contents of the can from time to time, remove dead butterflies and larvae, and select the required number of burdock for fishing.
It is very important not to damage the cones of the burdock during the collection, otherwise the microclimate will be disturbed and the eggs and larvae inside will die. Therefore, they must be picked carefully so as not to accidentally crush the burdock with your fingers.
Interesting!
Burdock moth is the only type of pest that is bred for specific purposes. Other types of moths: fur coat, food, cabbage, potato - only cause trouble for people.
From the stems of plants, the larvae of the burdock are gently shaken out, after having made several transverse incisions on them. In cut stems, they will no longer breed further, so they can be thrown out. This must be taken into account when collecting plants in order to stock up with enough of them.
